I hope everyone is having a wonderful, relaxing and adventurous summer. We are quickly approaching August and the 2015-16 school year. I hope all of your students are getting excited to see their friends and meet their teachers. As you begin to plan for the new school year, please keep in mind some important dates.
This year, DPS is offering online registration for all families for the 2015-2016 school year. You must have a Parent Portal account to register online. If you don’t have one or you forgot your password or you can’t log in (you must log in at least once every six months to keep your account active), you can ask for help by emailing portalteam@dpsk12.org or calling the portal hotline at 720.423.3163. Once you have a Portal account, you’ll be able to register online from July 13 until August 17th. We strongly recommend that parents register online and avoid the need to come in to Edison’s office in August to complete this paperwork. The online registration is NOW OPEN. In order to complete on-line registration/school verification please:
- Go to Parent Portal and click on the message titled “2015-16 School Verification
- The first screen of the Online Verification (OLV) process will display.
- Follow the instructions at the top of the screen and begin the OLV process for your family.
- You may get out of OLV at any point after finishing a tab by scrolling to the bottom of the screen and clicking on the “Save and Return Later” button.
- Log back in and locate the “2015-16 School Verification” link to continue with your verification process.
Please Note: When you receive a message that states “Loading data Just a moment… ” please be patient. This may take up to 2 minutes while OLV retrieves your family’s data for the first time from IC.
If you do not have a portal account or your address has changed, you will need to come to Edison to complete your student’s registration. We’ll have open registration at Edison on August 12 & 13 from 9:00-3:00. If your address has changed please bring a new proof of address (current Xcel or water bill or lease or mortgage statement), and if your child has had additional immunizations please bring an updated record. Otherwise all you’ll need is names and phone numbers for anyone you want to be on your child’s emergency/pick up list.
There are a few things that will be unable to be changed/updated through Parent Portal registration. For the following you will need to come to Edison’s registration (but you can still complete the actual registration online to save yourself time while you’re here):
- If you need to change emergency contact information, you will need to complete a new emergency contact form in Edison’s office during registration days.
- If your student needs to keep medication at school you will need to pick up a new form to be filled out by a parent and physician. These will be available at registration as well as in the office throughout the school year.
- If you need a transportation request form, you will need to complete this during registration at Edison.
- If you need a Free/Reduced lunch form, you will need to complete this during registration at Edison. This will be available throughout the school year as well.
- School supply lists and DPS school calendars will go home with students this year and will also be available at online and at registration in August.
- All kindergarten students will need to sign up for an individual assessment on either August 24 or in the afternoon of August 25. Parents will need to come to Edison’s registration to sign up; you cannot sign up over the phone or online.
Back-to-school night will be Wednesday, August 19 at 5:00 PM. There will be a potluck picnic on the field starting at 5:00 so families can get acquainted or reacquainted with other Edison families. Mrs. Whitelock will give a brief welcome to all families around 5:45 and then families can visit their student’s classroom from 6:00-6:30 and again from 6:30-7:00 if they have more than one child.
The first day of school for ECE and 1st-5th grades is Monday, August 24.
Kindergarten students will not have class on August 24, will have a half day in the morning on August 25, and will have their first full day on Wednesday, August 26.

Sign up for Parent Portal
Denver Public Schools’ Parent Portal is an effective way to gather your student’s academic, attendance and behavioral information. Additionally, DPS uses the Parent Portal for choice applications and, new this year, for on-line registration in the Fall. It is important to understand that if your Parent Portal account is unused for 6 months, it will be inactivated. Please make sure you have a Parent Portal account and log in regularly to it to keep it active. Thank you.
Lawn Party and Back-to-School Night
Our annual Lawn Party and Back-to-School Night is scheduled for Wednesday, August 19 at 5:00 PM. Please join us to kick off the school year with this fun community event.
5:00-6:00 – Bring a picnic dinner and join the community on the Edison lawn for a social event. Edison Extra Enrichment providers will share information on their before/after school programs.
5:45 – Welcome from the principal on the lawn.
6:00-6:30 and 6:30-7:00 – Welcome meetings in classrooms to learn about class expectations and drop off school supplies.
Are you getting emails from Edison?
At Edison, we work very hard to communicate information with families. Parents should receive monthly email newsletters from Edison’s office and weekly/monthly classroom newsletters from teachers. Edison is a green school, though, and we work very hard to recycle, reuse and compost. Therefore, communication with parents is done electronically. If you are not receiving monthly emails from the Edison office, please either change your status to receive email messages on Parent Portal or come in to the office and ask Michelle or Barbara to fix your settings on IC. Additionally, please friend us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter, join our Big Tent group and look at our website often for additional information about the goings on at Edison.
