A message from the Principal and AP

As we march through the school year, we want to take a moment to express our gratitude for your ongoing support and partnership in your child’s education. Together, we are making a positive impact in our students' lives.

Though it may feel far away for elementary age students, at Edison we strive to prepare our students for college and career. In elementary school, this looks like rigorous academics, character education, problem solving strategies and goal setting. To that end, teachers at Edison provide personalized learning for students in order to ensure that our diverse student body is highly engaged and academically challenged. Some instructional strategies we use to support our students in becoming life-long learners are:

  • Inquiry based learning - a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge.

  • Student goal setting - students are challenged to consider their learning strength and areas for growth in order to set personal learning goals.

  • Cooperative learning - a successful teaching strategy in which small teams of learners use a variety of learning activities to improve their understanding of a topic.

  • Differentiated instruction - a framework or philosophy for effective teaching that involves providing different students with different avenues to learning in terms of acquiring content and making sense of ideas.

  • Opportunities for choice and voice – teachers offer students learning experiences that are tailored to learning preferences and the specific interests of different learners.

  • Growth mindset - students are encouraged to learn from mistakes and value challenges. “I don’t know how to do this YET.”

We believe that providing these opportunities to students will build a love of learning and prepare students for their future. Please partner with us by talking to your children about what they are learning at school and encouraging them to pursue their passions and interests.

As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions, concerns or suggestions.

Sincerely,

Sally Whitelock, Principal,

Samantha Armijo, Assistant Principal
