Return to in person learning in January

We hope this message finds everyone safe and healthy. We hope that you are all planning some fun, enjoyable, socially distanced holiday events during this interesting year. It is our hope that 2021 brings new adventures and the opportunity to return to more normal activities.

As you are aware, DPS is committed to returning students to in person learning as soon as possible while also monitoring health conditions within our city. Susana Cordova, our superintendent, sent communication to the community yesterday explaining our plan for January.  Please read the letter from our superintendent, Susana Cordova, for additional information regarding this decision. Please plan on the following at Edison for January:

Kindergarten – 5th grade students who have chosen online learning for the 2nd semester will return to school on January 5 remotely with the same schedule and will continue using Seesaw to submit assignments.
* Students who participated in online learning this semester and wish to continue with online learning for the 2nd semester will continue with their same teacher in January.
* Students who chose in the in person learning option for the 1st semester but chose the online learning option for the 2nd semester will very likely have a different teacher. Parents will receive an email from Edison’s office as well as the new teacher communicating who the new teacher will be and other important information. The teacher change will occur on January 11 (or the 1st day that in person learning begins if a change of date is required due to health conditions).
* Student attendance in all live meetings will continue to be required. Teachers will input attendance into IC at the end of each day, based on student engagement in all live meetings and completion of assignments.

ECE-5th grade students who have chosen in person learning, will attend school remotely from January 5-8 with the same schedule and will continue using Seesaw to submit assignments. These students will then begin attending school in person, at Edison on January 11. The in person school day will be 9:00 AM-3:00 PM. Specials will continue to be remote, asynchronous and students will be expected to do these lessons/activities at home.
* Students who participated in the in person learning option this semester and wish to continue with in person learning for the 2nd semester will continue with their same teacher in January.
* Students who chose in the online  learning option for the 1st semester but chose the in person learning option for the 2nd semester will very likely have a different teacher. Parents will receive an email from Edison’s office as well as the new teacher communicating who the new teacher will be and other important information. The teacher change will occur on January 11 (or the 1st day that in person learning begins if a change of date is required due to health conditions).
* Students who attend school in person will continue to be required to follow health precautions to include:
— All students will stay in their classrooms throughout the day except for bathroom breaks, recess and outdoor learning. Both breakfast and lunch will be served in the classroom.
— All students will have their own sets of school supplies that they use each day and will not be shared with other students.
— All students will be required to wear masks while on school grounds and socially distance as much as possible.
— Students will bring their school supplies and Chromebooks to school and back home each day in case of a quarantine or return to remote learning.

Please support us in keeping our community as safe and healthy as possible so that we can bring our students back to in person learning in January. Please:
— wear a mask in all public places including outside;
— socially distance from everyone who is not in your immediate family/household;
— keep your social groups very, very small;
— wash your hands and use hand sanitizer very frequently.

DPS continues to communicate closely with the public health departments and government officials as we respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and will adjust our January return plans if needed. As decisions are made and adjustments are made, we will  communicate this with families. We strive to keep all students and staff at Edison safe and healthy, while also engaged in learning opportunities. We appreciate your support in these efforts.

Please stay safe and healthy.
