Parent Communication – Return to remote learning as of Nov 30

November 18, 2020

Dear Edison Community,

We hope this message finds everyone safe and healthy during this very difficult time. As Thanksgiving approaches, we continue to be so very thankful that we are a part of the caring, giving, supportive Edison community. It is truly a pleasure to serve this amazing community and a gift to get to spend our days watching children learn and grow. It is, however, with sadness that we send this message.

As you are aware, the City of Denver continues to be rated at a “Safer at Home – High Risk” level due to the high COVID positivity rate in Denver. Additionally, DPS’s superintendent announced that ECE-2nd grade students will move to remote learning as of November 30 and 3rd-5th grade students will continue with remote learning through Winter break. Please read the letter from our superintendent, Susana Cordova, for additional information regarding this decision at https://www.dpsk12.org/our-dps-weekly-november-18-2020/

For Edison’s kindergarten-2nd grade students, on Friday, November 20, students will bring home their Chromebooks, school supplies, and all learning resources that they will need through Winter break. Students will then return to the remote learning setting on Monday, November 30 through December 18, engaging in live lessons through GoogleMeets and completing assignments on Seesaw. The daily learning schedule will be the same as the in person schedule. This information will be shared with students and parents by the classroom teacher. The online school day will be 9:00 AM – 3:30 PM. As was true prior to returning in person, attendance is required for all students during remote learning. Student attendance will be taken at the end of each day, based on student engagement in all live meetings and completion of assignments.

For Edison’s 3rd-5th grade students, please plan on students continuing to learn online from November 30-December 18. Students will continue with the same schedule and Seesaw expectations during this time. If students need additional learning materials, their teacher will communicate when and how you can pick these up from the school (at the front window). We know that it is becoming more and more difficult for students to remain engaged with online learning. Teachers are working hard to encourage students and greatly appreciate parent support to ensure that students attend school daily for every live lesson and complete required Seesaw activities. Student attendance will continue to be taken at the end of each day, based on student engagement in all live meetings and completion of assignments. Together, we will keep students on track educationally!

For Edison’s ECE students, since students will not be able to attend school in person, we will again offer optional daily live lessons for: classroom meetings, read alouds, small math groups and small reading groups. The classroom teacher will share the schedule and live lesson links with parents.

Please support us in keeping our community as safe and healthy as possible so that we can bring our students back to in person learning as quickly as possible by taking as many health precautions as possible. Please:
– wear a mask in all public places including outside;
– socially distance from everyone who is not in your immediate family/household;
– keep your social groups very, very small;
– wash your hands and use hand sanitizer very frequently.

DPS continues to communicate closely with the public health departments and government officials as we respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. As decisions are made and adjustments are made, we will  communicate this with families. We strive to keep all students and staff at Edison safe and healthy, while also engaged in learning opportunities. We appreciate your support in these efforts.

Please reach out to me with any questions or concerns at Sally_Whitelock@dpsk12.org or Benita_Cervantes@dpsk12.org or 720-424-7780.

Please stay safe and healthy.

Sincerely,

Sally Whitelock, Principal
