Fuel Up To Play 60

Eat Healthy. Get Active. Make a Difference.

The Edison Elementary community joined the Fuel Up to Play 60 program in January 2015. Fuel Up to Play 60 is a perfect addition to our CARES traits and our Green Team/Wellness initiatives at Edison.

Fuel Up to Play 60 is a program founded by the National Dairy Council and NFL, in collaboration with USDA, that empowers students to take charge in making small, everyday changes at school. It rewards students for choosing good-for-you foods and getting active for at least 60 minutes per day.

On January 16, 2015, Miles, the Denver Broncos Mascot, came to Edison to kick off the Fuel Up to Play 60 program. Miles inspired our students to “fuel up” with low-fat and fat-free dairy, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains and to “get up and play” for at least 60 minutes per day.

With the support of Leprino Foods who donated $15,000.00 and many volunteers, Edison’s first Fuel Up to Play 60 “play” was a Cafeteria Remodel! On March 14, 2015, staff from Leprino Foods and the Western Dairy Association, with the support of the Edison community, remodeled the school cafeteria to create an environment which inspires students to eat healthy and exercise regularly. Edison’s artists, Angela Alexander and Robin Segura, designed a Farmers Market mural and an Outdoor Activities mural. School colors were painted on the walls and a celebration booth was installed. Additionally, the school gym was painted bright colors and a wii Dance system installed. Lastly, the Student Green team created CARES healthy living slogans:

C -Care for your body

A – Adventure outside

R – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

E – Eat fruits and veggies

S – Stay active

We would like every Edison student to get involved. Go to www.FuelUpTOPlay60.com and select “I’m a Student” to sign up, take the pledge and get involved. On this website, student can track their own eating and play habits, get ideas, and join in the activities at Edison. Students can earn points which result in rewards for them as individuals and possible new grants to Edison Elementary. Join in and have fun!

We are hoping to do at least one new Fuel Up to Play 60 “play” every year to encourage all of our students to Eat Healthy, Get Active, and Make a Difference.
